The European Commission has put forth a recommendation which includes all forms of motorsport. That recommendation is; that all motorsports participants in the European Union, including the United Kingdom, from Formula 1 to the most basic Go Karts, have third party liability insurance! This would insure against vehicle to vehicle damage, property damage to other structures, injury to third party individuals (spectators) etc..
The only problem with this, other than an incredibly unreasonable burden to the teams and participants, is that in the EU, this insurance DOESN'T EXIST. If this recommendation/proposal should pass, it in effect, would destroy motorsports in Europe. That in turn would have a devastating effect on the many Motorsports businesses located within Europe and one would supposed to the economy as well. Can you imagine the impact to all the long range planning that has gone into different venues, and the money that has been spent (and would be lost) in fees, deposits, rentals, etc.?
This recommendation/proposal in my opinion is pure idiocy most likely put forth by a bunch of politically correct, touchy feely, bureaucrats. I remember some years back I had the opportunity to drive the Nurburgring in Germany. I distinctly remember that to do this, you had to sign a release which in effect said that if you kill yourself, it's your fault. If you damage the track, you have to pay for it. If you hurt someone, it's your responsibility to take care of the situation. You were actually treated like an adult. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Simple.
Lets hope that this insanity in the EU does not come to pass. Certainly for obvious reasons, but if it did, you know as well as I do that there's some do good politician or lawyer here in the States that would latch on to this and try to get similar legislation passed here as well.
That's all for now folks. Hope this gives you something to contemplate and happy motoring!
